What to Do If Your Transmission Shuts Down

When your vehicle’s transmission goes out, your car is not able to move forward or backwards. If you are stranded on the side of the road, you need to first turn your hazard lights on and move as far out of harms way as possible. The side of the road is no place for a broken down car. If you are able, try to find a parking lot or driveway. If not, pull as far onto the shoulder as you can.

Call A Tow Truck

When you feel you are out of harms way and your car is safely in park, your next step is to call your local tow truck company. Since you car cannot move a tow truck is the only way to either get your car home or to your repair specialist. However, if you need to get your car looked at because you are unsure as to what exactly went wrong, you should have it towed to the shop instead of your house that way you don’t have to pay for two separate tows. If you are unsure of a certain shop to use, the tow truck company should be able to recommend a transmission repair specialist.

Talk To The Specialist

Once your car is at the repair specialist, you will be able to get a better idea as to why your transmission has shut down. The repair specialist will need to look over your transmission and get details from you as to what exactly happened when it stopped. This will help the specialist diagnose the problem(s) that could be wrong with the transmission. After the specialist diagnoses the problem they can then tell you how much it will cost to replace or repair the transmission. When talking to the specialist ask them what they think might be the best solution for someone who is in your position.

Assess Your Cars Value

Any and all car repairs can become rather expensive and pricey, this includes transmission issues. Therefore, when finding out the price to repair or rebuild your transmission a lot of things come into play. For instance, how many miles are on your vehicle, the overall shape of the vehicle, and if it is worth replacing or would it be better to just take the money to repair the transmission and just put it towards purchasing a new vehicle.

Once you have followed the steps above it is now time to decide whether or not you are going to fix the transmission problems. Whether you decided to fix or get a new vehicle, you need to talk to a specialist about any precautionary steps that you might be able to take to prevent this from happening in the future. Some steps may include regular scheduled check up, to just making sure that the transmission is always full of fluid.
